Element construction are building a number of apartment blocks in Huddersfield on a site that was approximately 5m below the main highway. The access to the site was from a ramp from the main road to the site. The contractor had build a temporary access road using site materials and sandbags. A permanent structure was required for access.

The Challenge

The engineers were Gravitate Consulting. The first ramp design used steel that transferred the loads into ground beams and piles. The project went over budget and the engineers were asked to see if they could come us with an alternative solution. BlockWalls were asked for some ideas.

The Solution

The solution was a mix of reinforced concrete interlocking blocks and a reinforced earth ramp. BlockWalls developed an outline idea. Gravitate then developed the idea and designed the solution up. The project was then re-estimated and came within budget. BlockWall prepared a delivery program, manufactured the blocks and delivered them to the construction sequence. The ramp was built to the timeline and was a great success.
